THE RANKING SYSTEM.

Here on Ultimate Shinobi, our ranking system extends beyond the basic ranks of Genin, Chuunin, Jōnin and Kage and have included a few rankings such as Experienced Genin, Special Jōnin’ and Master Jōnin' which are subcategories of certain rankings. This means that even though you may be an 'Experienced Genin', you are still officially ranked as 'Genin'. This continues on for the special ranks such as ‘Special Jōnin’ or ‘Master Jōnin'. These ranks have been implemented as a ‘half-way’ point that will encourage you to continue growing and feeling like you are obtaining something with your continual effort and roleplay.

Stated below are all the ranking achievements one must reach for their character to gain a new rank. Be aware that these numbers are not cumulative - this means that, for example, once you reach Experienced Genin, you must still complete an additional 3 missions and 2 more spars/battles in order to reach the next rank.

"Examples of Significant Character Growth" apply to all topic types. As such, this requirement can be satisfied via social threads just as easily as with missions. As long as your character experienced a notable form of growth, whether that's in strength of character, morals, ideals, world views, or combat ability, it counts. Keep in mind that is has to be significant development, so things that are small don't count individually. They can, however, add up - so if you feel that your character has experienced several small developments, those can be counted as one significant development overall.

While these numbers might seem large, keep in mind that you can combine objectives. For example, if you have to fight somebody during a mission, it counts for the mission and spar/battle requirements simultaneously. If you lead, fight in, and successfully complete a mission, it gives you one count towards all three. Additionally, you can lead and/or fight NPCs to satisfy the requirements as well.

For the missions, completing a mission one or two above your rank counts as two, and a genin completing an S-ranked mission counts as 3.

Rank Descriptions:

C-Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 15 jutsu maximum. C - Rank and below allowed.

Genin - Welcome to the bottom of the village - there's only one way to go from here. At the lowest tier in the village, Genin are those ninja that have recently graduated from the ninja academy. Fresh from school, their work and general life experience is minimal, thus they are now ready to begin the work of a beginner shinobi. Given that their skill and experience is often little at best, their work mostly lies within the basic chore-like tasks that are comprised into D and C - Rank missions.  In union with these missions, Genin are often formed into squads with a Jounin level sensei in order to increase their skills until they are deemed ready to advance passed this early stage.

Sasayaki [Whisper] - As the name suggests, these shinobi have very little renown across the land. Their deeds have affected the lives of few and if you're lucky, you might hear whispers of their accomplishments when passing through a remote village or town. These shinobi are new to wandering or just starting to refine their skills. They may stumble or have trouble finding their way, but one doesn't need the safety of a singular home with the free spirit of a wanderer. Quiet, like a whisper, they have only just begun their journey.

Meiwaku [Annoyance] - This is the bottom of the food chain where one’s value is little to none. One is merely the food for the bigger fish. As the lowest title within the missing ninja ranks, Meiwaku are comprised of the small amount of Genin who have managed to escape their villages alive or the people who were born in the shadows and have managed to take their first steps into the life of the criminal.  Not all who are born outside of the villages have an easy time of surviving and Meiwaku have little skills and even less of a reputation to work with. However, a life will pay off for those who are strong enough. Meiwaku generally perform crimes at D and C – Rank level; these being petty crimes of theft or similar acts - the type of crimes that don't require too much of a skilled hand or trusted reputation.

C+ Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 15 jutsu maximum. C - Rank and below + 3 B - Rank allowed.

Experienced Genin - Coming from the bottom of the village, Genin slowly progress, not only in missions but also in the trusted bond of a Shinobi. As a reward, they earn the title of Experienced Genin, a ninja that has more of a reputation with ninja work, having gained more experienced and skill. Whilst still within their squad, they are more capable of working alone or outside of the supervision of their Jounin Sensei.  However, they are still quite wet behind the ears and will have to be careful and think twice before taking on a task that is too big and as such, Experienced Genin still have to rely on working their way up through D and C - Rank missions.

Tsubuyaki [Murmur] - These wanderers have matured a bit more and are now more comfortable with the life of a vagabond. Rumors of their exploits are still rare, but more common than before. People in the regions they've walked are more likely to have heard murmurs about the things they've done and achieved. But like a passing wind, they often vanish from the area as quickly as they wandered in making some question whether or not they had ever been there at all in the first place. On their path, these shinobi have trained and refined their basic skills to a point of fundamental mastery, but there is still much more to learn and grow.

Futan [Burden] - A congratulatory celebration should be issued to those who have managed to pick themselves up from the bottom of the food chain. To go from Meiwaku to Futan, a criminal will have managed to get a more secure footing in the criminal world by gaining a bit of a reputation. However, this does not create a feeling of comfort as one slip up can mean their death. To get arrogant at this level of skill has always proved deadly. Futan take on crimes of D and C - Rank.

B-Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 25 jutsu maximum. B - Rank and below allowed.

Chūnin - Chūnin are commonly the bulk of the village forces. Most Genin possess the skill and experience to get up to such a level rather quickly, but it is difficult to tell if most have the skill and determination to get passed this stage. At this rank, the Shinobi in question have proven that they are capable of facing danger and defeating it. They have gained a moderate amount of skill and have shown that they were capable of passing the Chūnin exams which have often proven to be too much for many others before them. Those who achieve this rank can now become team leaders themselves, leading higher teams of Genin or Chūnin on more dangerous B - Rank missions as they attempt to further prove their abilities.

Denbun [Hearsay] - Since these shinobi never officially belonged to a hidden village, many fail to identify them as ninja. So when talk of their feats spread throughout smaller villagers, many denounce talk of their exploits as mere hogwash. Hearsay. They are capable of things most normal humans could only dream of doing and this sometimes shows when they perform jobs and quests to support themselves on their endless wandering journey. At this point, a wandering shinobi has begun to tap into their real potential and is discovering their strengths and weaknesses in ways the past versions of themselves could never have imagined.

Fuben [Inconvenience] - Well, you've managed to come this far without being eaten or stabbed in the back; although, it might be wise to start watching the aforementioned body part around this point. Fuben are Missing-Nin that have managed to pull themselves up from the bottom rungs of the ladder.  They have struggled through the first, and probably most difficult, stage of the criminal life.  Their skill and reputation are still meager, but they have gained enough street smarts and abilities that they are capable of performing more trusted mercenary or criminal work, thus partaking in missions of B – Rank levels.

B+ Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 25 jutsu maximum.  B - Rank and below + 3 A - Rank allowed.

Special Jōnin - If Chūnin are considered the bulk of a village's Shinobi forces, a Special Jōnin is roughly equivalent to a field captain. Special Jōnin are considered to be of above average skill levels and experience that have managed to surpass the levels of their more standard colleagues. These Shinobi are those who are more skilled in some areas than a Chūnin, but they still do not have enough experience to become a full-fledged Jōnin. Whilst their skill level and general life experience are anything but lacking, they still have quite a way to go before they reach the more elite level of Jōnin. Shinobi of this skill area are capable of performing B - Rank missions.

Kōdan [Rumor] - No longer are the rumors of these wandering shinobi limited to backwater towns and remote areas of the world. Word of their accomplishments have spread across entire countries and even reach the ears of the great shinobi villages. Many among this group have the good sense to keep a low profile, but even so, gossip still manages to spread whenever they get involved in large events. Having cultivated their talents into formidable weapons, these vagabonds stand out among their wandering peers as capable people more than fit to handle trouble.

Chōhatsu [Provocation] - For those select few criminal shinobi that have managed to watch not only their back for knives (or various other sharp pointy objects), but their front as well, it is possible to arise to the title of an Chōhatsu. At this level in the criminal underworld, one has been able to establish their network of contacts and enough of a reputation to get by without having to worry about those who are below them in skill. Of course, this does not mean that one is safe from the insecure shinobi above them that fear usurpation. At this level, it is generally advised that you trust no one and certainly take no food or drink from others. Chōhatsu are capable of performing B - Rank missions which they use to increase their reputation and skill.

A-Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 40 jutsu maximum. A - Rank and below.

Jōnin - There is nothing except skill, determination and perhaps just a bit of luck that will get you here. To ascend past the weak and through the hard ships and trials of shinobi life while still perfecting one’s skills, earns someone the title of Jōnin. These ninja are those who have nearly perfected their abilities and used them to surpass most of the others among the village force. They are one of the highest ranks in the village, and those who pass this level can only be described as the very best. As a Jōnin, they are often expected to participate in the training of those who rank below them within the village. Thus, it is not uncommon for a number of Jōnin to be placed in charge of a Genin squad or lead Chūnin on a mission. They are also expected to take part in the dangerous missions which can consist of an A - Rank escort mission, or even in rarity, an S - Rank assassination.

Gūwa [Fable] - Many stories are told about strangers coming from unknown lands to play the role of a hero or a villain. These wanderers personify such tales and bring them to life. Their lack of affiliation to any shinobi village combined with their extensive prowess and skill make their actions seem especially amazing. Because of this outstanding presence, whenever they do something of note it isn't surprising to find that it becomes a tale passed down to future generations. A unique kind of fame has been earned where only those whose lives they have touched truly know of their greatness. But that impact on those lives is profound enough to live on forever in the form of a fable.

Nayami [Trouble] - It would be quite surprising for someone to become this well-known in the criminal world while still being alive. By managing to evade not only criminals, but the continually strengthening village forces can only be justified by the suit of armor that coats one’s chest. Nayami are among a select group of extremely dangerous criminals. As those who have managed to stand out among the mass of killers and thieves who populate the shadows, these Missing Shinobi have gained quite a reputation of ability and skill, which allows them to be contracted for dangerous crimes of ill-repute. In order to amass more power, Nayami complete A or S - Rank missions.

A+ Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 40 jutsu maximum.  A - Rank and below + 3 S - Rank allowed.

Master Jōnin - Even though a Jōnin is considered strong and highly skilled in their own right, a Master Jōnin excels even farther. They are the few Shinobi that have perfected a vast majority of their skills and very few can rival their abilities. Although their skill is far below that of a Kage, they are the best a village has to offer for most missions or jobs. Much like Jōnin, they are capable of completing A and S - Rank missions, which are exceedingly dangerous. It can be said that Master Jōnin have nearly no threats, but that would be far from the truth. Even though they are among most skilled village members, a Master Jōnin should beware of their reputation… For one never knows when a Nayami or some other criminal may decide to pay them a visit in order to better their reputation.

Setsuwa [Narrative] - Stepping beyond the threshold of great men and women, the wanderers who find themselves counted among these few should count themselves lucky. They have reached the height of their potential and become icons in the eyes of many. Poets and storytellers who manage to witness their magnificence are inspired to craft grand tales recounting their adventures. These are not simply stories told to children to help them sleep at night, but inspiring narratives that touch the minds of people from all walks of life. Shinobi of this group possess power that surpasses the limits of most people. They have mastered themselves to their natural limits and become truly worthy of the legacy they've created.

Kigai [Harm] - If the Nayami are few in number then the Kigai are far fewer. This group only belongs to the Shinobi that have been either skilled or extremely lucky enough to keep themselves alive this long. Having surpassed the standard Nayami, the elite ninja almost have the ability to defeat any opponent, shy of those who are more powerful. It is because of this that even Kigai, in their mastery of skill, always seek to become stronger and smarter. Otherwise, they may fall to the Bringer of Death. Kigai may be enlisted to partake in the most dangerous of A and S rank crimes.

S-Rank
Starting Jutsu Limits: 60 jutsu maximum.  S - Rank and below.

Sennin - If a Shinobi has proven that they are capable enough to rise to the title of Sennin, they are in a class of their very own – their power being of equal comparison to a Kage or Organizational Leader.  As an S-rank shinobi, they have become the true masters of their skill groups, taking their said skills to a level which easily illuminates the flaws in others. Those who achieve the rank of Sennin are few and far between. Often to continue the shinobi art, these ninja take on apprentices or students in order to pass on their knowledge and skills. Although they do not have much need to partake in missions, Sennin have access to all levels of difficulty, but commonly only take on the ones of the utmost importance that they are called to complete.

Densetsu [Legend] - There are always a few in each generation. Those who have reached their limitations and still continued to train and improve relentlessly until at long last, they shatter those boundaries and go beyond them. The wanderers who become legends join an exclusive group of extraordinary people. They are known across the world for what they've done or for how strong they've become. Veterans of battle and experienced in a myriad of other arts beyond the art of war, these wanderers have reached the very pinnacle of progress. Often times, they have revolutionized the world in one way or another with their masterful jutsu and extensive knowledge. To be a legend is to be on the lips of every commoner from the east to the west. It is to send enemies fleeing at the mere drop of your name. There is much danger and risk that comes with all this attention, especially without the protection of a great shinobi village. However wanderers of this caliber hardly need the assistance. There are few greater honors than being remembered for an eternity.

Tensai [Natural Disaster] - As their name might imply, it is extremely unlikely for you to cross the wrong side of a Tensai and live to tell of the tale. Very few are able to survive the trials of criminal life in order to obtain this rank. Those that do are shinobi that recognize that there is no one that a person can trust fully. With such strength, Tensai are sought after by both village shinobi and fellow criminals for their bounty. These nin are contracted criminals of the highest order; if one wants an assassination done perfectly or a job done right, they contact a Tensai, even if the price isn't cheap. Capable of doing A or S rank missions, a Tensai is terrifying by him or herself. The only thing far more frightening would be if criminals of such a level were to form an alliance.

S* (Special Rank)
Starting Jutsu Limits: 60 jutsu maximum.  S - Rank and below.

Kage - To become a Kage is often considered an act of the highest respect a shinobi can receive. Elected by the wisest of the village council, a Kage is a sponsored shinobi who has been deemed capable of protecting and leading the village. These leaders are the strongest shinobi in their village and like the Sennin, have mastered their abilities to the highest order, making them capable of not only taking care of themselves, but their people as well. The Kage deals with all threats to the village and has the biggest impact on their decision to take up war or partnerships. These leaders are not only physically dangerous, but are talented in the art of politics and people, thus allowing them to bear the biggest of responsibilities on their shoulders.

Organization Leader - Most criminals merely adopt the shadows, yet on rare occasion, there is a Shinobi of immense power that lives with them as their ally. Not only is their identity often kept a secret, but their skills, although intimidating, are also largely unknown.  For obscure reasons, be it domination or destruction; a Shinobi of such power often gathers a group of puppets they can use to achieve their goals. Only those who are truly masters at what they do can recruit other black sheep into their herd of misfits and minions.  These ninja are as dangerous as they come; possessing the skills necessary to lead a dangerous army against the villages.

NOTE: As one continues to grow in rank, the maximum jutsu does not apply to you. There are endless possibilities.
